Be Brave to Speak !
From: College Teaching Affairs Office      By: Zhang Yajie, Zhao Lu & Ma Chuan      Date: 2016-06-13

Few days ago, CIE academic mentor Mr. Zou Yunfeng invited Mz. Teresa Jones from America to run a 8-hour course Oral English & American Culture for the Y2015 CIE students. Themed on Be Brave to Speak, this course aims at encouraging the students to open their mouth and voice their views in the real English environment, to experience the cultural differences and learn about American culture from natives.

The students had been seated in classroom long before the class began, longing for the coming of foriegn teacher. To have the students feel at ease, Mz. Teresa greeted the students warmly, who soon gains popularity with her witty style and rich expression.

On her class, she guided the students to put down their English and made brief self-introduction, encouraging the young learners to open their mouth and express their ideas. She familiarized the students with the importance of Be Brave to Speak. She showed the class her life in America, full of warmth and affection of family love. From the PPT made by the lovely teacher, the students learned more about her talents and hobbies, like dancing, singing, listening to music, cooking and house decoration. The life on the other side of the earth has few differences from the life here, plain but wonderful. In the Q&A session, the students were very keen and the speaker was very responsive to the questions. The teacher and the students had a nice talk covering the topic of American life and culture.

After the class, the students were active to take group picture with the teachers, to take the opportunity to talk with the lovely lady. The students were very impressed by the spectacular oral English class, and hoped to have more chances alike.

The two English courses offered by natives from English-speaking countries open a new window for the English keeners of our college, from which the students know about the cultural differences between America and China from the real life of an ordinary American. It builds up the students’ confidence in English speaking and helps the students to lay solid foundation for English learning.
