On the afternoon of Oct 12th, CIE held the preliminary English Speaking Contest in the college multimedia classroom, the rules of which was in accordance with A&F contest. Scores of students participated to compete for the chance of semi-final contest of A&F. Experienced teachers, Li Ting, Wang Huijuan and Nan Xinrong from A&F Foreign Language Department were invited to be judges.
The contest was conducted in the form of unprepared speech, in which each contestant was required to deliver a speech of 3-4 minutes on the topic they picked at random. The judges then challenged them with questions concerning the given speech of the contestant who was required to give the answer of 1 minute.
The sharp vision and strong speaking ability of all contestants were so impressive and attractive that all the audience were fully absorbed in the well-organized and breath-holding contest. At last, Wang Wei from innovative class111 of Life Science and Wang Xiangeng from base class 121 of Bio-engineering won the first and second prize respectively. Their language accuracy and fluency as well as the inspiring content enabled them to stand out of contestants and take part in A&F contest on behalf of CIE.
After the contest, Miss Li Ting commented on students’ performance, speaking highly of their passion in English learning and giving them some suggestions. English speaking contest is more than a stage for ability show of oneself; it also serves to improve their abilities to voice personal ideas, to think over big event and to communicate with others.
