On the morning of Nov 3rd, the 4th college lab tour of CIE commenced officially. 26 CIE students who were interested in entomology took a lab tour to A&F applied-entomology key laboratory and enjoyed their contact with scientific experiments and research. National Thousand Experts Plan entrant Professor Liu Tongxian gave a warm welcome and informative lecture to the young visitors.   

Professor Liu with humor shared his own experience in study and work when was at the same age as the students and introduced the entomology in terms of its initiation, development, and general situation. Then he showed the students detailedly the A&F applied-entomology key laboratory, including the research field, research project, research team and lab culture. Professor Liu pointed out that the entomology research should be kept in pace with international frontier and the students were supposed to learn to apply the scientific research method to solve the problems in real agricultural industry. He hoped that the students could estimate themselves as soon as they entered the university and kept goal-oriented and reflecting their future and way to success.

After the lecture, the students were invited to visit the A&F applied-entomology key laboratory where they learned about general situation and research field of molecular-biology lab and insect chemical signal lab, and the major function and primary skills of operating lab facilities, including electroantennogram, microscope, and gas chromatography-mass spectrography. Faculties in the lab were friendly to showed the students around. From the lab visit, the students know more about the A&F advanced experiment platform as their experience of well-organized, strict and intense lab work greatly mobilized their passion in research.

The “Laboratory Visits” was designed by our college to help the freshmen understand the A&F disciplines, mentors and research platform, to set clear goal and to lay solid foundation for future research innovation, application of students’ self-conducted experiments project and choosing academic mentor. More visits to lab are to be organized in the following weeks, in which Professor Wei Gehong, Professor Huang Lili, Professor Gao Jinming and Professor Zhang Yong will open the doors of their advanced labs for the CIE young visitors.
