At the final of 6th National (Northwest Division) Marine Knowledge Competition for Undergraduates held in Lanzhou, A&F team won the 3rd group prize and the team leader CIE students Liu Chang won the 3rd prize of individual award.

The 6th National (Northwest Division) Marine Knowledge Competition for Undergraduates aims at popularizing the marine knowledge among the youth, which is co-sponsored by State Oceanic Administration People’s Republic of China, Ministry of Education, the Central Committee of the Communist Young League and Naval Political Department and co-held by Publicity and Education Centre of State Oceanic Administration Xiamen Oceanic and Fisheries Administration.

Themed on Committed to Constructing the Navy Power of China, the competition was conducted the same time in 7 different regions. The teams were ranked referring to the total scores they gained in the four different sessions of required questions, T/F questions, multiple choice questions and taking a risk session, covering the knowledge of marine laws and policy, marine administration, navy, oceanic hydrometeorology, marine geology and geography.

CIE student Liu Chang of bio-engineering class 122 who was brought up in a coastal city has strong emotional tie to the ocean and takes part in the competition with full confidence. It is not an easy job for Liu to guarantee the full preparation for his first competition of this distinct in such short time, which requires one’s good master of marine knowledge covered in 1,400 questions without interfering with own academic study. Liu was so modest that he attributed the great success in the competition to the team work and said: “Were not for the joint efforts and team spirit of the teammates, he wouldn’t have won gain the prize on his own. The meaning of competition to me is more than gaining more knowledge, but also the sense of responsibility and honour of being one member of a team. ”

The National Marine Knowledge Competition for Undergraduates has been held annually since 2008, which aims at familiarizing the college students with marine knowledge and improving their awareness of marine issues, so as to raise their interest in the ocean and marine affairs and to encourage people to pay more attention to the ocean in terms of its development and protection.
