To better the students’ understanding of their majors, CIE held the fourth Cafe Salon of at Youren College the other day. As a new way of communication, it has served to enable the students more goal-oriented in choosing their mentors and would-be majors. We were honored to invite Professor Zhang Zhiying of Animal Science College and Professor Ding Wu of Food Science and Engineering College to the workshop.
At the Yuantongzhi science workshop, Professor Zhang introduced the Animal Science College in terms of its research orientation, laboratories facilities and the employment. He, then shared his personal experience in research, the hardships and the joys. “ There is no shortcut to the success of research”, he said, and encouraged the students to accumulate the knowledge and research experience with patience.
In the inquiry room at Youren College, Professor Ding Wu introduced the Food Science and Engineering College in terms of its disciplines, faculty, majors and research orientation. He then talked with the students over the research of live-stock products and food safety. “ Interest is the best teacher,” he said to the student, “ The major and research orientation you are choosing to work on must rely on your interest and your specialties.” He then shared his ideas with the students concerning the solutions of China’s food safety problems and the way to fulfill personal value.
Focusing on the choosing of academic mentors and disciplines of Y2013 undergraduates, this salon took advantage of the current resources of Youren College for further the communication between the students and their would-be mentors. It will help them better understand the research orientation of the mentors and make their options more sensible.
