| | The scorching summer can never stop the CIE students’ pursuit for dream. It was estimated that over 100 CIE students chose to stay at university instead of going home or traveling around. Some are to take this opportunity to prepare for various kinds of competitions and examinations, while some are going to take the research training, while other will be engaged in social practice. Their summer vacation will be greatly enriched with their effort to make themselves more competitive.
Research Training
For the Y2011 students who are going to start their graduate study, it is a good timing to activate their research training. With the instructions of their mentors, the students will receive research training through working on the undergraduate innovative experiment projects or student-conducted experiment project. This practice will help them to be more adaptive to the new life and study when they become the graduate students. Lu Wenqin from Life Science innovation class 2011(1) said: “ I will not allow the vocations slip by. I really enjoy the time I spent in the lab, learning about the function and the operation of the facilities, though I feel tired occasionally.”
It is the early bird that catches the worms. Among many diligent Y2012 CIE students, Shen Hui of Bio-tech Base Class 122 is one of them who spent the summer holiday helping in the laboratory. Though she mainly helped with some washing and weighing in the lab of Mr. Shan Weixing of Plant Protection College, she realized it was not a easy job to do those well. All students that worked in the labs took it a great chance to learn from the mentors and practice the literary review. They also learned hard to use the measure methods of all kinds of experiment, then to optimize their experiment plan.
Self Study
The room of students’ study club in building No. 17 of student apartment was kept open during the summer holiday. An increasing number of student were found studying in the club during the holiday. Some were working on the preparation for TOFEL or IELTS, while some for competitions of next term. It was said that the summer holiday was golden time for the student to accumulate knowledge. Free from the planed curriculum, the students could enjoy the study of their own will, effectively and goal-orientedly.
Social Practice
Everything must be only done then been understood profoundly. Not only the knowledge, but also the social practice has been paid more attention by the students, who took advantage of the summer holiday to help with the social community affairs. CIE volunteer team composed by over 10 students visited Xizhai village of Mei county. They spent 10 days servicing the local people, offering children free classes, and giving villagers technological support in farming. Their teaching enriched the knowledge of children, and their promotion benefit the villagers. In turn, they leaned about the progress of agricultural science and new village construction of our country. Also, they found out the problems that challenging the further development of rural area, which stimulate their determination to make more contribution to China.
Another group of CIE volunteer students paid visit to their high schools. Zhao Lijie and some other students visited No. 1 Senior High School and No. 3 Senior High School of Xihua County in Zhoukou city of Henan Province, handing out the A&F booklets to the middle school students. The other group leaded by student Feng Tianhua and Li Peng visited No. 17 Middle School of Shijiazhuang City. They organized a meeting at which they introduced A&F and shared their experience of NCEE(national college entrance examination). In turn, they get their abilities to communicate improved greatly and harvested the sense of achievement.
